Things To Do

Boat Cruises
Discover the breathtaking beauty of Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore on a boat cruise. Pictured Rocks Cruises are 2-3 hours long and you will see top sites like Chapel Rock, Miners Castle, Lovers Leap and Bridalveil Falls.
⏱️ Tour Length: 2–3 hours
⭐ Why I Recommend It
Seeing the cliffs from Lake Superior gives you a completely different perspective than the overlooks. If you’re only doing one activity at Pictured Rocks, this would be my top recommendation.

Kayaking
Pictured Rocks Kayaking launches guests from a boat, allowing you to spend more time paddling beneath the towering cliffs instead of kayaking long distances. You’ll explore sea caves, arches, and rock formations that larger boats can’t enter. Tours are weather dependent and may be canceled if Lake Superior conditions become unsafe.
⏱️ Tour Length: About 3–4 hours
⭐ Why I Want to Go Back
Kayaking is one experience I would love to add to a future visit to Pictured Rocks. Paddling along the colorful cliffs and through the sea caves would provide a much closer view of the shoreline than you can get from a hiking trail or larger tour boat.

Miners Castle Overlook Trail
Miners Castle is one of the most famous landmarks along Pictured Rocks and is the only location where visitors can drive to overlooks on the cliff. It is an easy 0.5 mile out and back hike. There is also a 1 mile section of the trail that leads from top of the cliff down to Miners Beach.
⏱️ Time Needed: 30-60- minutes
⭐ Why I Recommend It
The overlooks are just a short walk from the parking area, making it a perfect stop for families or anyone wanting incredible views without a long hike. If you have limited time, this should be near the top of your itinerary.

Grand Island
Located just off the coast of Munising, Grand Island is a beautiful escape filled with scenic cliffs, quiet beaches, forests, waterfalls, and miles of hiking and biking trails. Visitors can explore the island by ferry, guided bus tour, kayak, or mountain bike.
⏱️ Time Needed: Half Day to 1 Full Day
⭐ Why I Want to Go Back
Seeing Grand Island from the boat made me realize how much there is to explore beyond the shoreline. Next time, I’d love to take the ferry over, rent bikes, visit the beaches, and spend the day hiking and exploring the island. It’s one of those places that left me wanting more.

Miners Falls
Miners Falls is one of the most beautiful waterfalls in Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore. A short, mostly easy hike through the forest leads to a viewing platform overlooking the 50-foot waterfall as it cascades into Miners Basin.
⏱️ Time Needed: 45–60 minutes
⭐ Why I Recommend It
The hike is short enough for most families but still feels like an adventure. If you’re visiting Miners Castle or Miners Beach, it’s an easy addition to your day and one of the prettiest waterfalls in the area.

Wagner Falls
Located just outside Munising, Wagner Falls is a peaceful waterfall surrounded by a beautiful cedar and hemlock forest. A short boardwalk leads to the viewing area, making it one of the easiest waterfalls to visit in the Upper Peninsula.
⏱️ Time Needed: 20–30 minutes
⭐ Why I Recommend It
Wagner Falls is a quick stop that’s well worth your time. The short walk makes it accessible for nearly everyone, and the setting is quiet and relaxing. It’s a great place to visit before or after exploring the rest of Pictured Rocks.
🌊Love Waterfalls?
The Upper Peninsula is home to more than 300 waterfalls, making it one of the best waterfall destinations in the Midwest. During our trip, we visited Miners Falls and Wagner Falls, but there are dozens of others worth exploring if you have extra time.

🌟Our Day at Pictured Rocks
We spent one full day exploring Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore and packed in waterfalls, scenic overlooks, and an impromptu stop at a powwow!
🌄Morning
📍Wagner Falls
- ⏱️Time Needed: 20 minutes
- 🥾 Hike: Easy 5-minute walk from the parking lot
- 📷 Why We Stopped: Wagner Falls is one of the easiest waterfalls to visit in the area, making it a perfect first stop before heading deeper into Pictured Rocks.

🚲 Afternoon
📍Pictured Rocks Classic Cruise
- ⏱️ Time Needed: 2 hours, 45 minutes
- 📷 Why We Stopped: AMAZING views of the cliffs
- 💡My Tip: Younger children may get restless during the cruise, so bring snacks and a few screen-free activities to keep them occupied.

📍Miners Falls and Miners Castle
- Time Needed: ⏱️ 1.5 – 2 hours
- 🥾 Hike: Approximately 1.7 miles round trip total if you visit both locations.
- 📷 Why We Stopped: The short hike to the waterfall and breathtaking overlooks at Miners Castle make this an easy combination showcases both the forest and Lake Superior’s dramatic shoreline.
- 💡My Tip: Visit Miners Falls and Miners Castle back-to-back. They’re only about a 5-minute (2.1-mile) drive apart, making it easy to see both without backtracking.

🌃Evening:
📍Unexpected Stop: The Annual Munising Powwow
- ⏱️Time Needed: 1-2 hours
- 💲Free and open to the public
- 📷Why We Stopped: We stumbled upon the Annual Munising Powwow by chance, and it ended up being one of the more memorable parts of our day. Watching the traditional dancing, music, and regalia gave us an unexpected opportunity to experience indigenous culture while visiting the area.
- 💡My Tip: Visit the Munising Powwow Event Page for Dates and Times

💙 Future Trip Plans
Even after spending one full day exploring Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore, I left with a list of places I’d love to see on a return trip. Since my children were younger, we chose activities that were easy to enjoy in a single day. Next time, I’d love to take a guided kayaking tour along the cliffs, ride the ferry to Grand Island and spend the day biking, explore more of the nearby waterfalls, and visit Presque Isle Park in nearby Marquette.
