Why I Recommend It
Even if you aren’t interested in mining history, this tour is surprisingly fun. Riding the underground train into the mine makes the experience feel like an adventure, and the guides explain what life was like for the miners while showing original equipment, rock formations, and enormous underground chambers. This ended up being our favorite part of our vacation to Wisconsin (it’s right near the border of the state).
History
The East Vulcan Mine first began producing iron ore in 1877 and operated for 68 years, producing more than 21 million tons of iron ore. In 1958, the abandoned mine was transformed into a tourist attraction so visitors could experience what working underground was really like. Today, it remains one of Michigan’s most popular historic attractions and offers guided tours through a preserved section of the original mine.
