⭐ Why I Recommend It
We’ve visited Mackinac Island five or six times, and it never gets old. Our kids still get excited to bike the eight-mile shoreline, ride in horse-drawn carriages, and explore the island on horseback. It’s one of the few places where slowing down is part of the experience, and that’s exactly what keeps bringing us back.
If I could recommend just one Michigan destination for first-time visitors, Mackinac Island would be at the top of the list.

Bike the Island
Biking the 8.2-mile loop around Mackinac Island has become one of our favorite family traditions. The route is mostly flat, making it enjoyable for riders of all ages, and the turquoise water and views of the Mackinac Bridge make every mile unforgettable. We always stop along the shoreline to wade into the crystal-clear water, skip rocks, and admire the bridge stretching across the Straits. About halfway around the island, you’ll find a place to grab ice cream before finishing the ride.

Take a Horse-Drawn Carriage Tour
A horse-drawn carriage tour is one of the best ways to experience Mackinac Island at a slower pace. As your guide shares the island’s history, you’ll pass beautiful homes, historic landmarks, wooded trails, and scenic overlooks. Our family has taken the carriage tour several times, and it’s always one of our favorite ways to see parts of the island that we wouldn’t have explored on our own.

Visit Fort Mackinac
Perched high on a bluff overlooking downtown Mackinac Island, Fort Mackinac offers a fascinating look at the island’s military history while providing some of the best views on the island. During our visit, we watched a rifle demonstration and experienced the excitement of the cannon firing. With historic buildings, interactive exhibits, live demonstrations, and panoramic views of the harbor, it’s a stop that’s both educational and entertaining for visitors of all ages.

The live demonstrations brought history to life and kept our kids engaged from start to finish. We also loved the incredible views overlooking downtown Mackinac Island—it’s one of the best places to capture memorable family photos and appreciate the beauty of the island.
