From peaceful trails and waterfalls to hands-on museums, beautiful gardens, and one of our favorite local markets, Flint has plenty of places for families to spend a day together. Whether you’re exploring Stepping Stone Falls, Sloan Museum of Discovery, the Flint Children’s Museum, For-Mar Nature Preserve, the Flint Farmers’ Market, or historic Applewood Estate, these are some of the places that show a different side of our hometown — and the Flint we love sharing with others.
⭐ Why I Recommend It
Flint often gets overlooked as a place to visit, but there are so many experiences here that families can enjoy. I love that you can spend the morning exploring a museum, walk through a beautiful nature preserve in the afternoon, and finish the day at a local market or along the river. As our hometown, these are places we’ve enjoyed over the years, and I’m excited to share some of the best parts of Flint with other families.

Things to Do
Sloan Museum
We’ve visited Sloan Museum many times over the years, and it has always been a fun place to take the kids. While the museum celebrates Flint’s important automotive history, there’s much more here for families to explore. The hands-on science exhibits and interactive play areas have always been the biggest hits with my kids, giving them plenty of opportunities to touch, build, experiment, and learn while having fun.

I love attractions where kids can learn without feeling like they’re at a museum, and Sloan does that really well. There’s enough variety to keep different ages interested, and because exhibits and special activities can change, we’ve enjoyed coming back more than once.

Applewood Estate
Applewood Estate is a beautiful historic property in Flint that combines history, gardens, and family-friendly activities — and admission is free! Once home to the Charles Stewart Mott family, the estate offers the chance to explore the beautiful grounds and gardens, take an informative tour of the historic home, and enjoy special programs and events throughout the year. There are activities for both adults and children, making Applewood an easy addition to a family day in Flint.
⭐ Why I Recommend It
Applewood was especially fun to visit when our kids were little. They could explore the gardens and participate in children’s activities while we enjoyed the beautiful grounds and history of the estate. I also really enjoyed touring the house — it’s fascinating to step inside and learn more about the family who once lived there. With free admission and different events throughout the year, it’s a wonderful place to slow down and spend a few hours together.

Crossroads Village
Crossroads Village & Huckleberry Railroad is one of those places that feels different every time you visit. We’ve experienced the village in every season—from summer days riding the Ferris wheel, carousel and Genesee Belle to Halloween fun in the fall and Christmas lights and shows during the holidays. One thing that has stayed a favorite through it all is the Huckleberry Railroad, which we’ve ridden during every season—including a special visit with Thomas the Tank Engine!
⭐ Why I Recommend It
I love that Crossroads Village offers a different experience depending on when you visit. Summer is perfect for enjoying the rides, boat and village, while Halloween and Christmas completely transform the experience with seasonal activities and decorations. The train has always been a family favorite, and special events like Thomas the Tank Engine make it especially fun for younger kids. It’s a place we’ve enjoyed coming back to again and again as the kids have grown.

- 🎡 Don’t skip the carousel – Crossroads Village is home to what is known as the fastest carousel in Michigan, which makes this classic ride even more fun.
- 🎟️ Book popular train events early – Train tickets for special events like Day Out With Thomas and the Christmas season can sell out, so I recommend purchasing tickets ahead of time rather than waiting until your visit.
- 🎃 Come back for Halloween – The village transforms for its Halloween event, making fall feel completely different from a regular summer visit.
- 🎄 Christmas is especially magical – Holiday lights, decorations and family-friendly shows turn the village into a festive Christmas experience.
- 🚢 Make time for the boat ride – It’s a relaxing way to slow down for a bit and see the area from the water.
- ⏰ Give yourself plenty of time – Between exploring the historic buildings, riding the train and enjoying the attractions, it’s easy to spend several hours here—especially during a seasonal event.
Stepping Stone Falls
Stepping Stone Falls is a peaceful spot in Flint that’s perfect for a walk, enjoying the water and spending a little time outdoors. We’ve visited several times over the years, and our kids have always enjoyed exploring around the falls, watching the geese and looking into the water for the huge carp and catfish swimming below.

I recommend Stepping Stone Falls because it’s an easy place to slow down and enjoy some time outside without needing to plan an entire day around it. Our kids have always loved watching the geese and trying to spot the enormous carp and catfish in the water. It’s one of those simple local places we’ve enjoyed returning to as they’ve grown.

Flint Children’s Museum
The Flint Children’s Museum is packed with hands-on activities designed for kids to learn through play. Children can shop in a pretend market, climb aboard a fire truck, play house, dress up and take the stage in the theater, and explore a variety of other interactive exhibits. There’s also a changing exhibit area that gives families something new to discover on return visits. Throughout the year, the museum hosts special events and seasonal activities, including celebrations around Christmas and Easter.

The Flint Children’s Museum was one of those places where my kids could easily spend hours when they were little. I loved how much of the museum encouraged imaginative play — they weren’t just looking at exhibits, they were shopping, dressing up, pretending, climbing and exploring. The changing exhibit area and special events also gave us reasons to come back again, so each visit didn’t feel exactly the same.

For-Mar Nature Preserve
For-Mar Nature Preserve & Arboretum is one of our favorite places in Flint to get outside and explore. We’ve visited in every season, hiking the trails, exploring the woods, catching frogs, and attending nature programs and classes. One of our favorite stops is the pond, where we always look for turtles, frogs, geese, fish, and whatever other wildlife might be hiding nearby. With miles of trails, wooded areas, wetlands, and plenty of opportunities for kids to discover nature up close, every visit can be a little different.

For-Mar has been a place our family has returned to again and again as the kids have grown. I love that a visit can be as simple as taking a walk and looking for turtles at the pond, or we can make more of a day of it by attending one of their educational programs. There’s always something for the kids to discover, and visiting throughout the different seasons gives us a new experience each time.
