As Michigan’s capital city, Lansing has plenty of museums and educational attractions, but we’ve found lots of other family fun here too. Over the years, we’ve visited the zoo, explored hands-on science exhibits, learned about Michigan history, gone snow tubing, played at indoor entertainment centers, and even wandered through a pet store that feels like an attraction all on its own. Just a short drive away, Grand Ledge offers a completely different experience with scenic trails and sandstone ledges along the Grand River.
⭐ Why I Recommend It
I recommend Lansing and Grand Ledge because there’s something for a wide range of ages and interests. Younger kids can enjoy the zoo and hands-on exhibits, while older kids and teens may prefer snow tubing, indoor entertainment centers or exploring Fitzgerald Park. With both indoor and outdoor attractions, it’s easy to plan around the weather and create anything from a quick outing to a full day of exploring. Grand Ledge adds a scenic outdoor experience beyond Lansing’s museums and city attractions.

Things to Do
Potter Park Zoo
Potter Park Zoo is a family-friendly zoo in Lansing that packs a lot into a smaller, easy-to-explore space. Along with seeing animals from around the world, families can enjoy additional activities such as the farmyard, camel rides and other seasonal experiences. We’ve visited several times over the years, and there always seems to be something extra for the kids to enjoy beyond just seeing the animals.
⭐ Why I Recommend It
One of the things we love most about Potter Park Zoo is its size. Some larger zoos can turn into an exhausting, all-day experience, but Potter Park feels much more manageable. We can take our time, enjoy the animals and activities, and still make it through the zoo without everyone getting tired of walking.
The extra experiences have also made our visits more memorable. Over the years, our kids have enjoyed camel and pony rides, train rides, the petting farm and other seasonal activities. It’s a great choice when you want the fun of a zoo day without committing to a huge zoo.

Impression 5 Science Center
Impression 5 Science Center is a hands-on children’s science museum in downtown Lansing where kids are encouraged to touch, experiment and explore. I started bringing my kids here when they were really little, and for years it was one of those places where they could easily spend hours moving from one exhibit to the next.
Some of their favorites were playing with the water in FLOW, experimenting with giant bubbles and climbing inside the huge mouth to pretend to be a dentist. There are exhibits throughout two floors covering everything from water and bubbles to engineering, electricity and the human body.
⭐ Why I Recommend It
I recommend Impression 5 especially for families with younger and elementary-age kids. What we loved most was how interactive everything was. Instead of walking through a museum and simply looking at exhibits, the kids were constantly doing something—splashing in the water area, making bubbles, building, experimenting and learning without really realizing they were learning.
My kids have grown out of it now, but Impression 5 was a favorite for many years when they were younger. It’s also a great place to keep in mind for a rainy, snowy or cold Michigan day when you need something fun to do indoors.

- 💦 Bring a Change of Clothes: The FLOW water exhibit can get pretty wet! Impression 5 recommends bringing extra clothes for kids who plan to play in the water area.

- 🥪 Pack a Lunch or Snack: You’re welcome to bring your own food and take a break in the designated eating area. Vending machines are also available.

- 🚗 Parking is Limited: There are two free parking lots at the museum, but spaces are limited. Metered street parking and downtown parking ramps are nearby if the lots are full.

Hawk Island Snow Tubing
Hawk Island Park turns into one of our favorite Lansing-area winter activities when the snow tubing hill opens for the season. We’ve been snow tubing here about three times, and every visit has been a lot of fun. The hill has multiple tubing lanes, and the best part might be the magic carpet that carries you—and your tube—right back to the top.
⭐ Why I Recommend It
We love Hawk Island because you get all the fun of snow tubing without wearing yourself out climbing back up the hill after every run. The magic carpet makes such a difference, especially when you’re tubing with kids. Instead of being exhausted after a couple of trips down, we could spend our time actually enjoying the hill.
It does take some advance planning because tubing sessions can sell out very quickly, but we’ve loved it every time we’ve been able to go. If you’re looking for a fun outdoor activity during a Michigan winter, Hawk Island is definitely worth trying.

- ⏰ Tubing Is Session-Based: Reservations are for scheduled tubing sessions, so arrive with enough time to get checked in and ready before your session begins.
- ❄️ Weather Matters: Tubing availability and conditions can change depending on the weather, so check for updates before heading out.
- 🧤 Dress for the Cold: Waterproof snow pants, gloves, boots and warm layers make the experience much more comfortable, especially since you’ll be outside for your entire session.

Preuss Pets
Yes, it’s a pet store—but Preuss Pets is also one of our favorite places to stop when we’re in Lansing! This huge, family-owned pet store is filled with animals to see, from colorful fish and birds to reptiles, small animals and more. With indoor ponds, tropical plants and animals around seemingly every corner, it’s fun to simply walk around and explore even if you aren’t shopping for a pet.
⭐ Why I Recommend It
We’ve stopped at Preuss Pets many times over the years simply because our kids love seeing all of the animals. They especially enjoy checking out the fish, birds and ferrets, and there always seems to be something interesting to see.
I recommend adding it as a quick stop between other Lansing attractions, especially for families with kids who love animals. It doesn’t require a big time commitment, and since you’re visiting a store rather than a traditional attraction, it’s an easy way to add something different to your day.

Michigan History Museum
The Michigan History Museum in Lansing takes you through Michigan’s story from its earliest history through more modern times. Exhibits cover everything from Michigan’s natural resources and early communities to transportation, manufacturing and everyday life throughout the decades. There are plenty of recreated spaces and artifacts along the way that make the history much more interesting to explore.
When we visited, we combined the museum with Impression 5 Science Center for a full day in Lansing, which worked really well.
⭐ Why I Recommend It
I recommend the Michigan History Museum because it’s interesting without being overwhelmingly large. There’s enough to see and learn to make it worthwhile, but we didn’t feel like we needed to spend an entire day there.

Horrocks Farm Market
Horrocks Farm Market is much more than a place to pick up groceries. This huge Lansing market is packed with fresh produce, flowers and plants, specialty foods, baked goods, candy and all kinds of fun things to browse. We’ve stopped here just to walk around and see what we can find, and it’s one of those places where you can easily spend more time than you expected.
⭐ Why I Recommend It
One of my favorite things about Horrocks is the huge selection of unique foods, drinks and treats you don’t find in a typical grocery store. I especially love coming here around the holidays to find unusual candy and pop for the kids’ Christmas stockings and Easter baskets. It’s become one of my favorite places to look for something a little different.
Even when we aren’t shopping for a holiday, we enjoy wandering through the market, checking out the flowers and plants and seeing what new things we can find. It’s one of those Lansing stops where we rarely leave empty-handed!

The Ledges
Just outside Lansing in Grand Ledge, Fitzgerald Park is home to one of the most unique hiking areas in Mid-Michigan. The trail follows the Grand River alongside sandstone rock formations known as “The Ledges,” with wooded paths, exposed roots, overlooks and plenty of places to stop and take in the scenery.
I’ve visited twice just this summer, and I would probably go even more often if it were closer to home! It’s become one of my favorite places in the area when I want an easy outdoor adventure with scenery that feels completely different from most of Mid-Michigan.
⭐ Why I Recommend It
I love the Ledges because the hike is interesting from beginning to end. Instead of simply walking through the woods, you’re following the river, passing beneath towering sandstone ledges, climbing over roots and constantly finding something new to look at.
It’s also a hike that feels adventurous without requiring an all-day commitment. We’ve seen people climbing along the rocks, spotted wildlife and stopped at several places along the river to enjoy the view. If you enjoy scenic hikes but don’t want to travel all the way to northern Michigan or the Upper Peninsula to find dramatic scenery, the Ledges are definitely worth the trip.

- 🥾 Wear Good Shoes: The trail has exposed roots, rocks and uneven sections, so I recommend sturdy shoes rather than sandals or flip-flops.
- 🪨 Stay Off the Ledges: The sandstone formations are beautiful but fragile. Signs ask visitors not to climb on or write on the rocks to help protect them.
- 🌊 Follow the Grand River: Much of the scenery comes from the combination of the sandstone ledges, wooded trail and views along the river.
- 📸 Bring Your Camera: There are plenty of photo opportunities along the trail, especially around the larger rock formations and river overlooks.
- 🌳 Expect a Real Trail: Parts of the hike can be narrow, rooted or uneven. It’s more adventurous than a flat paved nature walk.
- 🍂 Consider a Fall Visit: The Ledges are beautiful in summer, but the wooded trail and river would also make this an especially scenic hike when the leaves change.
